Cena's team explode on Raw but there are no fireworks

IF last week's WWE Raw was a red hot edition, then the follow-up was a rather lukewarm affair.

This week's show wasn't cold, but certainly didn't have the heat to get the waters bubbling.

The story was that the unit that John Cena had built at the conclusion of last week was falling apart at the seams, while Nexus stood together united.

The show began with Cena referencing his previous week's efforts, only to be interrupted by Chris Jericho who said that it was he who should be the team's leader. The pair debated this in a very strong verbal exchange, only to be interrupted by the chime of the mystery General Manager.

Michael Cole read the email from the anonymous GM, in which he made the fourteen man tag at SummerSlam an elimination match. This might be a disastrous move, because you are looking at up to 13 eliminations in one match, serious devaluing falls.

The GM's missive also booked Cena and Jericho in a tag match that night, with opponents to be named.

We soon found out the duo in question. Sheamus watched Randy Orton easily beat Jay Uso, and started to attack him after the event. Orton evaded the assault, and nailed an RKO on the Irishman.

This was the cue for The Miz to emerge, briefcase in hand, and attempt to cash it in on WWE Champion Sheamus. However, before he could do so, he too felt the force of an RKO.

When Miz and Sheamus squabbled soon after, the GM booked the pair as the team to face Cena and Jericho in the main event.

When that took place, like much of the rest of the show, it was a fine but nothing memorable until Jericho got tired of being on Cena's side and hit him with a codebreaker, allowing Miz to cover and get the win.

Cena and Jericho fought after the bell, with Khali emerging to try to settle the dispute.

He was soon speared by Edge - with whom he'd argued earlier in the show - and when rivals John Morrison and R-Truth also hit the ring all six men argued.

Bret Hart was not at Raw - in storyline he was training, in reality on his honeymoon - but expect him to return in a 'coach' role next week.

It wasn't a bad Raw by any means, just not as hot a show as the dynamite effort seven days previous.

Let's hope the heat is turned up once more next time in time for SummerSlam.

Vince McMahon: "WWE is America's greatest export"

WWE boss Vince McMahon has laid out his vision of the wrestling business in a rare newspaper interview.

Speaking to hometown publication the Connecticut Post, McMahon both praised and defended his company.

He opened by boasting:

"I like to say that WWE is America's greatest export. It's big-time Western culture.

"I think so many people just can, from an elitist standpoint, say 'I don't watch that'.

"But when you've got 16 million people in the United States alone that watch WWE programming — roughly four times the entire population of the state of Connecticut — somebody likes this and they watch it every single week."

After admitting that he regretted some of the WWE's previous storylines, McMahon also tackled the issue of steroids in the wrestling business and the Chris Benoit murders.

Speaking on his new strict drug testing procedures, Vince said:

"You evolve in terms of how you want to run your company, you evolve in terms of how you want to present it and you evolve in terms of the way you treat your performers.

"Even if we didn't personally care — I'm very close to a lot of these guys personally — it's good business.

"I like to say the only raw material that our company really has are our talent.

"The better shape they're in the more you can invest in them. The healthier they are the greater longevity and all of that so it's just good business."

On Benoit, he added:

"Who knows what clicks in somebody's head one day? People look for excuses as to why someone would do that. I don't think you can point to his profession as to why he did that.

"Nothing ever happened like this since the advent of this business, and it goes back to Abraham Lincoln."

Sun man Simon Signs for TNA

SUNSPORT Wrestling Editor Simon Rothstein has been snapped up by TNA to open a UK and Ireland office.

Simon will now leave The Sun, where he has covered the grappling game expertly for the last nine years.

He used to write under The LilsBoys name along with tag team partner Richard Bernstein, before kicking him through the proverbial barber's shop window to go it alone.

His time here has seen a string of exclusives and interviews picked up around the world, as well as a clutch of prestigious awards and nominations for him and our wrestling pages.

Simon said:
"I am really going to miss writing for The Sun, where I've covered the highs and lows of almost a decade in the wrestling business.
"I've been to five WrestleManias, three Lockdowns and countless other major WWE and TNA events and got to interview and work alongside my heroes including Stone Cold Steve Austin, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Kurt Angle, Paul Heyman and the late Eddie Guerrero.

"Mostly I'm going to miss the readers, whose feedback has helped make the website and our WrestleCast show what they are today.

"But I leave a great team behind, who will take the site from strength to strength."

Simon added: "Ever since my first trip to Orlando to see TNA, I have felt like part of the family.

"The UK and Ireland are of huge importance for TNA and where we already enjoy record ratings and profile.

"I hope to see lots of Sun readers on the January tour so I can share a beer and hear their feedback."
