WWE Survivor Series 2010

Self-professed "Co-Divas Champions" Layla & Michelle McCool vs. Natalya

Self-professed “Co-Divas Champions” Lay-Cool may have made the gravest mistake to the besties’ title reign when they gave Natalya one more opportunity to become the first female Hart family descendent to wear championship gold in WWE.

At WWE Survivor Series, WWE Divas Michelle McCool and Layla will look to defend the Divas Title in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match against a No.1 contender who’s proven herself capable of unseating WWE’s Mean Girls. Natalya, who’s spent weeks enduring the condescending and high-pitch insults of Lay-Cool, has gotten the best of both co-holders of the lustrous prize on separate occasions. By defeating WWE Diva  McCool, she earned a title bout at the 23rd annual WWE Survivor Series.

WWE Star John Morrison Comments on WWE Manager Vince McMahon

WWE Superstar John Morrison was interviewed by Sport.co.uk this week. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Who are the biggest jokers in WWE?

Santino. He’s hilarious. But you know, the most successful sports entertainers are extensions of themselves, so you can tell right away from watching Santino in the ring that he’s got a great sense of humour, he’s funny, he’s energetic, it’s no surprise that when you hang out with him he’s the same way. And maybe not lately but John Cena of the Nexus is hilarious also, he’s got a point and a view on everything, he’s got an opinion about everything, he likes to rap and then five minutes later sing a country song. Those guys all have their personality and it’s impossible to say who’s the funniest or the loudest, but if I had to pick one I’d pick Santino.

  • What’s your relationship like with Vince McMahon?

Vince is like a father I’ve never met. He’s awesome though, I think he’s a workaholic and in a way he’s like a coach that believes in you but also expects your absolute best at every moment. So every time you fall short of that, you feel a little bit guilty, but at the same time you know he just wants everybody to be their best and to put into this what he puts into it, and he works harder than anybody.

WWE Pinned

Times are not good for the Masked Marauder or his cohorts at World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: WWE). The tough economy makes filling those arenas with choreographed mayhem as tricky as pinning Andre the Giant.

For the third quarter, company revenues fell 2% from last year, and year-to-date (YTD) revenues are down about 1%. The only reason net income isn't down is because of large cuts to expenses -- $9 million to SG&A this quarter and $15 million YTD. This bad news is somewhat offset by free cash flow numbers. The wrestlers dragged $515,000 of it into the ring this quarter, and $23 million YTD. Fortunately, the company sits on $84 million of cash with only $2 million of debt, so while things are slow, it is by no means in danger of being disqualified.

The notable thing about an investment in World Wrestling Entertainment is that its business is based entirely around discretionary income, and that's not something people have a lot of these days. The business is essentially held hostage by the economy. However, it's interesting that companies like Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN) are seeing upticks in attendance. Revenue is spiking at Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq: WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS), and retailers like Blue Nile (NYSE: NILE) are also seeing sharp increases in revenue. For whatever reason, people are spending their money on those fun things, but not on wrestling entertainment.

Still, the company is on solid footing financially and it's not like the business has vanished. It just isn't growing. That may not be reason enough to consider buying the stock, however, the 10.4% dividend sure looks nice. Present financials give me no reason to believe that dividend will be cut. Although with any such payout, I'd dig a little deeper to make sure it's sustainable.

So consider pulling on those spandex tights and jumping into the ring. The company isn't going away, and Vince McMahon is paying you to wait it out.

WWE Former Shawn Michaels was on the CBS Atlanta news yesterday

WWE Former Shawn Michaels was on the CBS Atlanta news yesterday evening to promote WWE Wrestlemania XXVII tickets go on sale Saturday. To clear up confusion, Michaels is helping WWE promote Wrestlemania but is not under a new deal with the company. He is also not scheduled to make a return to WWE TV as of this writing. I would not be surprised if he appeared on WWE TV in the build to Wrestlemania as he is close with several in the company, but it's highly unlikely he ever wrestles again.
